Rock the Day Twin Summer Hits

July 2, 1956: Elvis Presley records Hound Dog in New York. It’s done after 31 takes. The tune was originally an R&B hit for Willie Mae (Big Mama) Thornton. Don’t Be Cruel, Elvis’ biggest ‘50’s hit, is also recorded. The songs will be released 10 days later, soar to the top of the charts, and cement Presley’s reputation as The King. It’s Presley’s first session with backing vocals by the Jordanaires. Here’s Big Mama, followed by Elvis, with Hound Dog, then Don’t Be Cruel.
