1915: Billie Holiday is born.
1954: The Penguins release doo-wop classic Earth Angel — recorded in a garage — on the small independent Dootone label. It will sell four million copies and peak at #8 on the charts. Earth Angel proves that independent labels can break through and dozens of small record companies spring up in its wake. Another result of Earth Angel is a contract with giant Mercury Records for The Penguins, whose name is inspired by the Kool cigarettes logo.
