1966: Monday Monday becomes The Mamas and the Papas only #1 hit. Written in about 20 minutes by John Phillips, Monday Monday has what’s known as a false ending — a pause before the coda of the song, and then a half-note step up for the bridges and refrains. It is the second consecutive number-one hit song in the U.S. to contain a false ending, succeeding Good Lovin’ by The Young Rascals.
