Manfred Mann

1964: Manfred Mann is in the studio recording Do Wah Diddy Diddy, written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, who are trying to recreate the success they had with Da Do Ron Ron. First recorded by the mostly girl  group The Exciters (who sing “There he goes . . . “) in 1963, the original doesn’t excite anyone. The Manfred Mann cover hits #1 in the U.K. in July ’64 and climbs to #1 in the U.S. by October. In 1981, it’s revived on the soundtrack of the movie Stripes with Bill Murray.

Rolling Stones1966: Paint It, Black by The Rolling Stones climbs to #1 on the charts.
