Tommy James and the Shondells Mony Mony1968: Tommy James and the Shondells rule the charts in the U.K. with Mony, Mony.

The BeatlesThe Beatles record Hey Jude, which will spend nine weeks at #1 and become the group’s biggest hit. Originally titled Hey Jules, the ballad is written by Paul McCartney — and credited to Lennon/McCartney — to comfort John Lennon’s son Julian during his parents’ divorce. As if anything can heal the hurt a divorcing parent does to a child.

Paul Anka1941: Singer-songwriter Paul Anka is born in Ottawa, Ontario. He has four #1 hits, including Lonely Boy from the film Girl’s Town. He writes My Way for Frank Sinatra, She’s a Lady for Tom Jones and the theme for NBC-TV’s Tonight Show. In his early 70s, it’s like he’s just getting started. Anka is currently on tour — performing just last night at the Spirit Mountain Casino in Grand Ronde, Oregon.

Help Movie The Beatles1965: The Beatles’ Help — their second feature film — premieres.

Dylan Bike1966: Bob Dylan is injured in a motorcycle accident near his home in Woodstock, N.Y. He goes into seclusion and the incident immediately passes into myth. Some speculate that the accident did not happen at all — that Dylan simply uses it as an excuse to withdraw. Middletown Hospital admits him with a concussion and broken neck vertebrae. Dylan suffers from paralysis and mild amnesia for the next month.

Mike Bloomfield 11944: Mike Bloomfield is born in Chicago, where he grows up surrounded by the Blues. He gets his first guitar at age 13, plays clubs on the South Side and teams with talent the likes of Big Joe Williams. Eventually he is signed to a recording contract with CBS Records. He is in the backing Butterfield Blues Band that appears with Bob Dylan at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival on the night that changed rock forever when Dylan went electric. Tragically, we lose Bloomfield in 1981, when he dies of an overdose in San Francisco.

His younger brother Chris also is a musician. Mick of course is founder and lead vocalist with The Rolling Stones. Here is the bio. Here’s Jumpin Jack Flash:

Dylan at Newport1965: Bob Dylan takes the stage at the Newport Folk Festival with a Fender Stratocaster. Backed by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, he rips into Maggie’s Farm as horrified folk fans recoil. A half century later, it is hard to sort out truth from myth about the moment Dylan goes electric at Newport. One thing is certain: Neither “folk” nor “rock” ever will be the same.

The Police1983: The Police’s album Synchronicity — their fifth and final studio album — begins a seven-week run at #1 on the charts. The album’s title is inspired by Arthur Koestler‘s The Roots of Coincidence, which mentions Carl Jung‘s theory of synchronicity. Sting is an avid reader of Koestler, and also names Ghost in the Machine after one of his works.
