1941: Otis Redding is born in Dawson, Georgia, where he will grow up to become one of the seminal voices of R&B. He is the son of a gospel singer and spends his early years singing in church. His break comes when he is 15 years old and wins a local talent contest. His (Sittin on) The Dock of the Bay is recorded in late 1967, just before he dies tragically in a plane crash. The song becomes the first-ever posthumous #1 hit.
