1964: The Rolling Stones — the self-titled debut album — begins a 12-week run at #1 on U.K. album charts. The version of the album released in the U.S. includes a cover of the Buddy Holly standard Not Fade Away, which enters U.S. singles charts at #98. That’s the Stones’ first chart appearance in the U.S. Phil Spector and Gene Pitney both contribute to the production of The Rolling Stones LP, which is an immediate smash hit in the U.K. The only song on the album credited to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards is Tell Me (You’re Coming Back to Me).
