VM1945: Van Morrison is born in Belfast, Ireland. God, what a voice. His biggest hit is Domino from 1970. For good reason, though, I am partial to Brown-Eyed Girl from 1967.

Highwaymen1961: The #1 song in the U.S. Is Michael, Row the Boat Ashore by The Highwaymen. The group is five freshmen from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut.

Donovan1966: Donovan’s trippy summer-season Sunshine Superman goes to #1 on U.S. charts. Release of the single in the U.K. will be delayed seven months due to a recording contract dispute. When it is released across the water, it goes to #2 on U.K. charts. This one is as fresh and bright as the morning sunshine spilling softly through your window.

hooker1912: Influential bluesman John Lee Hooker is born this day (most sources say) in  Tutwiler, Tallahatchie County, Mississippi. Some sources say his birthplace is near Clarksdale, Coahoma County. No matter where he begins, he is the consummate blues artist. We lose him far too soon in 2001.

1965: Two singles are released today, illustrating opposite ends of the 60s spectrum: Barry McGuire’s Eve of Destruction and The Lovin’ Spoonful’s Do You Believe in Magic? Eve of Destruction will go to #1. Do You Believe in Magic? will play in your heart forever. Yeah, they’re 60s songs but as alive and real today as ever.
