leader_of_the_pack_album1964: The Shangri-Las take over the top spot on U.S. singles charts with “teen death song” Leader of the Pack. When released in the U.K., the song is banned by the BBC because of the death theme — the leader of the pack dies in a motorcycle wreck, according to the song’s narrative. It charts three times in the U.K. anyway, at #11 in 1965; at #3 in 1972 and again at #7 in 1976.
