the-doors-light-my-fire-1967-7The Doors release Light My Fire in the U.S., where it will become #1 on the singles chart two months later. When The Doors are booked to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show they are asked to change the line “girl, we couldn’t get much higher,” as the sponsors are uncomfortable with the possible reference to drugs. The band agrees to do so, and completes a rehearsal using the amended lyrics; however, during the live performance, lead singer Jim Morrison sings the original lyric, after which The Doors are informed they will never appear on the Sullivan show again.
