CashJohnny Cash records the first version of Folsom Prison Blues at the Sun Recording Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Cash is inspired to write this song after seeing the movie Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison (1951) while serving in West Germany in the United States Air Force at Landsberg, Bavaria (itself the location of a famous prison).

doorslmfThe Doors start a three-week run at #1 on the U.S. singles chart with a short version of Light My Fire — edited down to make it compatible with AM radio custom. Radio stations in the U.S. later begin playing the full six-minute-and-50-second album version, which includes a long instrumental break.

Roy OrbisonRoy Orbison hits the U.K. chart with Only the Lonely, which will give him the first of three #1 U.K. hits. As an operatic rock ballad, it is a sound unheard of at the time, and is seen as a seminal event in the evolution of Rock and Roll. Released as a 45 rpm single by Monument Records in May 1960, Only the Lonely peaks at #2 in the U.S. Orbison records it after it is turned down by The Everly Brothers and Elvis Presley.

Crosby,_Stills,_Nash_&_Young_-_Deja_VuNeil Young makes his initial performance with Crosby, Stills & Nash at the Fillmore East in New York. Young is initially asked to help out with live material only, but ends up joining the group on and off for the next 30 years. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young have their first LP hit with Deja Vuwhich includes Carry On.

ub40004UB40 starts a seven-week run at #1 on the U.S. singles chart with Can’t Help Falling in LoveElvis Presley has the first hit with the song, in 1961. Corey Hart is next up with a Top 30 hit in 1987, and Hall and Oates record the song for 1990’s The Last Temptation of Elvis charity album. UB40 originally covers the song for the Honeymoon in Vegas soundtrack, but Bono’s version is chosen instead. Also on this day, UB40 goes to #1 on the U.K. album chart with Promises And Lies.

Rolling StonesThe Rolling Stones are at #1 on the U.K. singles chart with Honky Tonk Women. It is the group’s eighth and final U.K. #1. The song is written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards while on holiday in Brazil and the Stones initially record the track as Country Honk in London in early March 1969 with Brian Jones present during the sessions.
