Roy OrbisonRoy Orbison hits the U.K. chart with Only the Lonely, which will give him the first of three #1 U.K. hits. As an operatic rock ballad, it is a sound unheard of at the time, and is seen as a seminal event in the evolution of Rock and Roll. Released as a 45 rpm single by Monument Records in May 1960, Only the Lonely peaks at #2 in the U.S. Orbison records it after it is turned down by The Everly Brothers and Elvis Presley.
